In-School Dentist to see children on Wed Feb 10 | Call School office with questions @AmerDentalAssn

February is National Children's Dental Health Month. National Children’s Dental Health observances began with a one-day event in Cleveland, Ohio and a one-week event in Akron, Ohio during February 1941.

Since then, the concept has grown from a two-city event into a nationwide program. The American Dental Association held the first national observance of Children’s Dental Health Day on February 8, 1949. The single day observance became a weeklong event in 1955. And in 1981, the program was extended to a month-long celebration known today as National Children’s Dental Health Month.

Fill out the permission form that was sent home and have your child seen by the in-school dentist on Wednesday, February 10th. If you have questions, call the school and ask about the dental visit on Wednesday.

Happy #YearoftheMonkey | Sending you all warm wishes of peace & prosperity | Gung Hay Fat Choy

According to historical documents, on the day when Shun, who was one of ancient China’s mythological emperors, came to the throne more than 4000 years ago, he led his ministers to worship heaven and earth. From then on, that day was regarded as the first day of the first lunar month in the Chinese calendar. This is the basic origin of Chinese New Year. China adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1911, so Chinese New Year was renamed the Spring Festival.

The red posters with poetic verses on it were initially a type of amulet, but now it simply means good fortune and joy. Various Chinese New Year symbols express different meanings. For example, an image of a fish symbolizes “having more than one needs every year”. A firecracker symbolizes “good luck in the coming year”. The festival lanterns symbolize “pursuing the bright and the beautiful”.

30th anniversary (January 28, 1986) loss of Space Shuttle #Challenger @NASA @EarthSkyScience

On today’s date 30 years ago, the Space Shuttle Challenger (mission STS-51-L) exploded and broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, after an O-ring seal in its right solid rocket booster (SRB) failed at liftoff. The explosion led to the deaths of all seven Challenger crew members.

Because shuttle launches had become routine after 24 successful missions, those watching found the explosion difficult to believe until NASA confirmed the accident.  (More)
