Today (Monday 1/19) we observe the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and his Quest for #Equality

Martin Luther King, Jr. was instrumental in getting the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed. That law made it illegal to treat people differently because of the color of their skin. In 1964 he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. That same year, he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. Our country is celebrating his birthday on January 19.

Check out these resources, activities, and lesson plans to learn more about him and the quest for equality:

Founding Father, inventor, scientist, ambassador, abolitionist, philosopher, printer

Benjamin Franklin—one of America’s most fascinating and colorful historic figures—was born 309 years ago this Saturday, January 17. Franklin was many things: Founding Father, inventor, scientist, ambassador, abolitionist, philosopher, printer, librarian, writer, fireman, military commander, businessman: the list goes on. 231st Anniversary (1/14) marking end of Spanish-American War & recognized American Independence

The Treaty of Paris of 1783 ended the Revolutionary War between Great Britain and the United States, recognized American independence and established borders for the new nation.

After the British defeat at Yorktown, peace talks in Paris began in April 1782 between Richard Oswarld representing Great Britain and the American Peace Commissioners Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, and John Adams. The American negotiators were joined by Henry Laurens two days before the preliminary articles of peace were signed on November 30, 1782. The Treaty of Paris, formally ending the war, was not signed until September 3, 1783. The Continental Congress, which was temporarily situated in Annapolis, Maryland, at the time, ratified the Treaty of Paris on January 14, 1784.

1st Freeway in the West | SR-110 opened 12/30/1940. Happy 74th! #LAHistory #CaltransDist7

The beautiful and historic Arroyo Seco Parkway (State Route 110), formerly known as the Pasadena Freeway, marked an important transitional moment in the history of American freeway engineering and transportation.

The Arroyo Seco Parkway opened to the motoring public in 1940. At the dedication ceremony, California Governor Culbert L. Olso declared the Arroyo Seco Parkway to be the "first freeway in the West." It was hailed both as a "modern" and "novel" road by state highway engineers due to its safety features. A 1945 study pointed to these safety features as an explanation for the remarkably low ration of traffic accidents that the parkway enjoyed in comparison to other major highways with similar traffic volumes.  Residents of the region described it as the "hanging gardens" of the Arroyo, or more simply as "picturesque."

The historic Arroyo Seco Parkway was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in February 2011, designated a National Scenic Byway by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation in 2002, and designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1999 by the American Society of Engineers.
