DST was first adopted to replace artificial lighting so they could save fuel for the war effort in Germany during World War I at 11:00pm (23:00) on April 30, 1916. It was quickly followed by Britain and many countries from both sides, including the United States. Many countries reverted back to standard time post-World War I, and it wasn’t until the next World War that DST would make its return to many countries in order to save vital energy resources for the war.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt instituted year-round DST in the United States, called “War Time” during World War II from February 9, 1942 to September 30, 1945. The law was enforced 40 days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and during this time, time zones were called “Eastern War Time”, “Central War Time”, and “Pacific War Time”. After the surrender of Japan in mid-August 1945, the time zones were relabeled “Peace Time”.

1st Annual 5K Fun Run | Promote physical fitness | Sat, March 8 7:30a @EREEF90041 @OxyNews

Please join our friends EREEF and Occidental College as they host the 1st Annual 5k Fun Run to promote physical fitness at Eagle Rock Elementary and in the general Community.

The 3.1 mile course starts and ends at Eagle Rock Elementary and takes all racers through the beautiful campus of our neighbors at Occidental College.  All participants receive a draw-string backpack, finisher's gift, and other goodies!

Registration is $25; however, you can save $5 with your valid PTA card. Students at Eagle Rock Elementary run free with a paid adult entry.   This is a NON-TIMED EVENT and all walkers and runners are welcome!

Parent Teacher Conferences are here and will take place next week, Monday March 3 through Friday March 7.  Dismissal Monday through Thursday will be at 12:45 and on Friday at 2:35.

Please join our principal, Mrs. Leach this Thursday, February 27th and Friday, February 28th, when she will host a Kinder Open House between 9 and 10 a.m. for parents that are ready to enroll their children into kindergarten for the forthcoming 2014-2015 school year. This is a great event where you can learn more about our program. Please pick one of the two dates, and please remember this is an adult event.

The day of the Lunar New Year is the most celebrated holiday of the year for nearly 1.5 million persons of Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese descent in Southern California. It is celebrated with colorful festivals, parades, and most importantly, large family gatherings. It is also a time when ancestors are fondly remembered and families give thanks for their blessings. Red packets of money (“Lai See” or “Hung Bao”) and firecrackers add fun and excitement to the Chinese New Year celebration.
